Sam Josh and crew are unbelievably talented at what they do. I had years of chronic back pain evaluated and treated with different forms of physical therapy, but the only place that has led to lasting improvement is my work with Essential Strength. I gve them the highest recommendation possible to anyone looking to recover and build strength.

I sustained a serious injury (proximal hamstring tendon tears) to my leg a year ago and I have tried several different treatments to get FULL function of my leg, a year later and I still can’t do all the things I did prior to my injury. I was referred to Sam by my Orthopedic doctor. This experience has been nothing but Amazing. I'm doing things, I never thought I would do again with my leg. I'm getting stronger everyday and soon I will be doing all the activities I did prior to my injury, pain free! I’m so grateful for Sam and his Team. I highly recommend Essential Strength for Recovery and Prevention of Injuries.

A friend referred me to essential strength when I was suffering from debilitating back pain from a herniated disk that was not responding to traditional PT. As a prior runner and yogi, I was skeptical that weight training would be a solution. Essential strength proved me wrong...Working with the team, I have built strength and addressed pain...Three months after starting with the team, I was back to strenuous hiking and cycling and about 9 months later I was back to running. Their knowledge of physiology and biomechanics has been invaluable. It may seem expensive, but this was one of the best investments I've made in my health.

After three different doctors told me I needed a partial knee replacement... I was referred to Sam and his team. Six months later, I'm walking completely pain free and have even started running again! ... The results have been so remarkable that I've committed to working with them for a full year. My goal now isn't just to maintain my knee - it's to get in the best shape of my 50-year-old life!

I was referred initially from an orthopedic surgeon who suggested trying strength training to address my hip issues. Sam was great at both understanding the problem and crafting a unique solution. I continued on with Sam doing personal training to continue to benefits of the initial phase and have been super satisfied with results. Sam has a wealth of knowledge and the exercise routines follow a clear plan with results in mind. Highly recommend for anyone looking for high quality personal training!

Freedom From Back Pain

Back Pain Recovery Case Study

We see clients with chronic back pain all the time. They've gone to doctors, PT, chiropractors and nothing works. That's because doctors and surgeons are not treating the true source of the pain. We have seen hundreds of MRIs that look like a war zone, herniated discs at L4-L5, degeneration, stenosis, yet the client has zero pain and squats 400 pounds. Conversely, we have seen MRIs that look pristine, yet the client can’t put on their socks without weeping.

The structural damage you see on the scan is rarely the root cause of the pain. It is merely the symptom. The cause is almost always a lack of Structural Balance. Hear Rick talk about how we fixed his back pain.

"A constant, grinding ache in my lower back"

For years, a constant, grinding ache in my lower back defined my life. It affected everything. I slept terribly and couldn't play with my kids. I had tried the usual route of chiropractic adjustments, MRIs, and physical therapy, but every time I started to feel better, a flare-up would knock me back to square one.

Sam identified the source of the issue when I came in for my assessment, which was stiff hips and an overextended spine. None of the doctor's I've seen had taken the time or care to identify.

He put me on a post-rehab program and within weeks I was moving without fear, and over the course of two years, I built pounds of lean muscle. I transitioned from basic mobility work to heavy compound lifts, proving the doctors who told me I would never deadlift again completely wrong. And most importantly, today I'm completely pain-free.

Full Recovery From Surgery

Post-Surgery Full Recovery case Study

We have clients who come in after years and years of PT, lost and confused to why their body still feels "different" and "shaky". They are worried the injury has permanently changed their body for the worse. When we told Alex he could still deadlift weights, he thought we were crazy. He said that doing so would re-injure his hip again. Hear him tell his story.

Alex Avakian

“I was so scared of re-injuring my hip”

After my hip labrum surgery I did PT for six months, but after I left the program I still felt scared using my hip. I was really protective of my hips and I refused to do any movements that I felt would reinjure it. I was scared of running or doing any heavy physical activity in my daily life. I had plateaued in PT. Then a friend recommended I talk to Sam.

Sam said that because I was trying to protect the area I was hurt, I was actually straining my body and causing more pain and dysfunction. He had me start doing seated good mornings and I thought he was going to get me hurt because that was one of the exercises I felt would injure my hips. But I followed his program and after 3 months I felt more confident about using my hip, and 6 months later my range of motion was higher than before my injury. I've been going to Essential Strength for almost 2 years now. I'm lifting more weights than before the injury. They've completely transformed my life.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the physical therapy I just finished?

Physical therapy does a fantastic job of getting you out of pain and restoring basic function. Our job is to take over where they left off. We focus on rebuilding the high-level strength, power, and sport-specific movement patterns required to handle the demands of competition and intense activity, significantly reducing the risk of re-injury.

I'm not a professional athlete. Is this program for me?

Yes. We work with people of all fitness levels. We've treated people who just wanted to play pickup basketball without knee pain, dedicated amateur marathoners, parents who wants to be able to ski with their kids confidently again. If you have a performance goal and an injury is holding you back, this program is for you.

Is this safe for my specific injury (ACL, rotator cuff, etc.)?

Absolutely. With direct experience leading a major hospital's return-to-play program, we are experts in the specific protocols and progressions for a wide range of post-surgical and non-surgical recoveries. Safety and proper progression are the cornerstones of our methodology.

What does the "Comprehensive Performance Assessment" involve?

The assessment is a 60-minute session where we analyze your movement quality, test for strength imbalances, assess your core stability, and discuss your specific goals. It provides us with the critical data needed to build your program and provides you with a clear understanding of why you're struggling and how we're going to fix it.
