What We Do

Best Personal Training and Sports Performance Facility In Pittsburgh

Whether you are an athlete trying to get to the next level, a high performer with a busy schedule looking for something that "just works", an injured person recovering from surgery worried about re-injury, we have the program that gets you results.

Message From Our Founder

Built for Pittsburgh: A Higher Standard of Personal Training.

Essential Strength: The Product of 10+ Years. 10,000+ Hours. One Relentless Mission.

To the person looking for more than just a workout: My name is Samuel Pitcairn. I am the founder of Essential Strength, and I built this facility for one specific reason: I was tired of watching people not get the results they wanted in their healthcare and training.

My Promise to You

Everything we do is the culmination of everything I have learned, tested, and refined in world-class medical facilities and private labs.

I earned my Master’s Degree in Sports Science from the University of Pittsburgh and my Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from Ohio University. I am a USAW Certified Coach and have served as a Sports Scientist for University of Pittsburgh and led return-to-play programs at UPMC. I've studied under legends like Charles Poliquin and Ben Prentiss. I immersed myself in the clinical philosophies of the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) and the Gray Institute.

When you walk through my doors - whether you are an elite Division I athlete, someone trying to get out of chronic pain, or just trying to lose that last 10 pounds - you are getting a holistic system that works.

If you are ready for a higher standard of training -welcome to Essential Strength.

The How

Why Essential Strength Is Different from Other Pittsburgh Gyms

Essential Strength reject the one-size-fits-all group fitness model. Everything we do - from our Master's level coaching to our biomechanical assessments - is designed to help you break through plateaus, overcome chronic pain, and transform your body.

Fix Chronic Pain

Postural restoration to correct imbalances and help you move without hurt

Functional Training

Specialized techniques that eliminate weak links in your movement by ensuring your nervous system fires muscles in the correct order.

Reflexive Performance Reset (RPR)

A neurological "reboot" that prepares your body to perform at its peak before you even lift a weight.

Progressive Overload

Scientifically programmed progressive overload so you never plateau.

Injury Prevention & Real-Time Rehab

We bridge the gap between physical therapy and the gym, correcting issues during your workout to keep you safe and resilient.

Instant Tension Relief

Gua Sha, soft tissue therapy, and integrated manual release

Our Culture

Building Community Not Just Muscles

Training is solitary, but transformation happens in a community. Whether it's cheering each other on at our in-house powerlifting competitions, or hanging out at the annual Christmas party, or finding a new sport you love at our summer pickleball tournament - you’ll find your tribe here.

Meet Our People

All of our trainers have advanced degrees in areas related to fitness and sports science.
